Unveiling the iPhone 4.0, Steve Jobs sold 450,000 iPad

During a keynote oranisé Thursday in Los Angeles, Steve Jobs introduced the next iPhone 4.0 software which becomes available this summer for 3G iPhone and iPod Touch 3, and fall for the iPad. He took the opportunity to give the first sales figures of the touch pad, and unveiled its strategy in advertising and video games.

He must imagine the scale. Fun, including in these columns, for it brings little innovation compared to the iPhone which is a giant copy, the iPad is on track to experience a huge success. While Thursday unveiled the iPhone OS 4.0, Steve Jobs announced that 450,000 iPad were sold by Apple since its release in the U.S. last week. It's as if every inhabitant of a city the size of Lyon (intramural), already had its touch pad. Apple can be accused of all faults in the world, but the Cupertino company knows how to sell its products as a person.

The firm has issued 600,000 electronic books with its service iBooks, which should please the publishers will see in Apple had the same savior for his time in the music industry during the release of iTunes Music Store. It is not known yet how many books were actually purchased, as iBooks offer thousands of free books from the library right Gutenberg. Similarly, over 4 million applications downloaded by users iPad, we do not know yet how many were paying.

But the star of the day at the keynote was the iPhone though, already sold 50 million copies. Apple is trying to strike while the iron is hot, and therefore does not want the iPad steals the show too. As expected, Steve Jobs has unveiled the iPhone OS 4.0, which finally gives access to multitasking. It will be possible to switch from one application to another (if provided for) by double tapping the home button, which will display a taskbar. The new software will bring other innovations, like the ability to organize applications in folders icons 9 each, or consolidate messages conversations in the "Mail" as does Gmail.

But to benefit from the summer of 2010, it will have at least one iPhone 3G. Owners of iPhone 3G or first generation iPhone and will be left on the low side, probably due to insufficient processor power to handle multiple applications simultaneously. Only certain features are available, but not multitasking. The iPad itself will be updated to iPhone OS 4.0, with all its features.

Apple also announced the launch of its own advertising network for mobile devices, IAD, with clearly stated ambition to compete with Google on its land. He has not hesitated to oppose the strategy of the firm in Mountain View, ensuring that advertising is more profitable in the heart of applications in research, provided that make it attractive for the user. He took the opportunity to tackle once again Adobe, whose Flash (which is not supported by iPhone / iPad) is currently the leader in display advertising online, by displaying interactive and animated advertisements carried in HTML 5.

Finally, Steve Jobs takes advantage of the iPhone and iPad to conquer a land which had hitherto been lacking in Apple: the video game. The firm will build on Xbox Live and Playstation Network to create a "Game Center, which will facilitate the creation of multiplayer games with friends and pool scores and other awards received during play. But with 50,000 mobile games catalog is mainly market shares of the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS that Apple hopes to titillate. Especially since many of these games will one day play on the Apple TV, if the rumor is true.
